Rose quartz and amethyst are both quartz, both Mohs 7, and both sold as “the gentle one” — but they are not interchangeable. Rose quartz is pink, opaque-to-translucent, and worn for softness. Amethyst is purple, usually more transparent, and worn for clarity and restraint. If you are choosing one, choose by the colour you will still want in three years, not by the meaning.

The difference you can see
Rose quartz is almost never transparent. Good material is milky with a faint inner glow, and the colour should be even rather than patchy. Much of the cheap pink quartz on the market is either heavily included (fine, but not the “milky” look) or dyed — and dyed rose quartz has a flat, slightly artificial pink that looks the same under every light.
Amethyst is the opposite: its appeal is depth. Fine Uruguayan material is deep violet with red flashes; Zambian is darker and bluer; Brazilian is often lighter and more banded. Zoning — colour concentrated in stripes or at the crystal tip — is normal and is not a defect, though a strand matched from tip material will cost more than one cut from the pale base.
The meaning, and the marketing problem
Rose quartz has the strongest commercial meaning in the catalogue: 桃花运, love luck, the stone you buy after a breakup or before a first date. That reading is modern and largely Chinese-retail driven, but it is genuinely how the stone is used. The quieter and more defensible reading is self-regard — the stone is worn as a reminder to be less harsh with yourself, which is why it sells well beyond the romance market.
Amethyst has an older and more literary history in the West — sobriety, clear judgement, the bishop’s ring — and in Chinese usage it is 紫水晶, a wisdom and calm stone. Both are cultural associations. Neither has a mechanism, and both are worn because the object carries a reminder, not because the mineral does anything.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy rose quartz if the wearer dresses in warm neutrals, if the gift has a romantic or self-care occasion, or if you want a first crystal piece that will not look like a statement.
- Buy amethyst if the wearer dresses in cool colours or black, if the piece is for work rather than for home, or if you want something that reads as older and more deliberate.
- Buy both if you are stacking. Pink and violet sit well together because they are neighbours on the wheel, and a strand of each with a thin gold spacer is one of the most reliable combinations we sell.
The one rule: do not buy either for someone who wears no jewellery. Both are soft-looking stones that depend on being worn close to the skin; on a person who is not used to a bracelet, they read as an object rather than as part of them.
Care, which is nearly identical
Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth. Neither needs ultrasonic cleaning, and both should be kept out of strong direct sun — amethyst especially, which will visibly pale over a summer on a windowsill. Perfume and hairspray dull both. Store separately from harder stones, and do not wear either in a chlorinated pool if you want the polish to last.
Questions people ask
Is rose quartz or amethyst better for love?
Tradition gives love to rose quartz and calm to amethyst. If the intention is a relationship, rose quartz is the conventional choice; if the intention is to stop making decisions from a bad place, amethyst is the more honest one.
Can men wear rose quartz?
Yes. The convention against it is recent and mostly Western. A 10 mm rose quartz strand with a dark stone reads as warm rather than feminine; a full pink stack reads as a deliberate choice.
Why did my amethyst go pale?
Sunlight. The colour centre is sensitive to UV and the change is permanent. Keep amethyst out of direct sun and it will hold for decades.
Is “lavender amethyst” real?
Yes — pale lilac material, often from Brazil or Madagascar, sometimes heat-treated to lighten. It is genuine amethyst, just a different grade.
The meanings described here are cultural associations, not medical claims. Crystal jewellery is worn as a reminder of an intention; it does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
