Moonstone and labradorite are both feldspar and both flash blue, but they are different minerals with different looks, prices and failure modes. Moonstone is milky with a floating band of light; labradorite is dark with a sheet of colour that appears when the angle is right. If you are choosing between them, the decision is mostly about contrast and body colour, not about meaning.

The one thing most buyers get wrong
Rainbow moonstone is not moonstone. In the trade, “rainbow moonstone” is white labradorite — same mineral as the dark stone, but a pale body with blue flash. It is usually harder-wearing in appearance, cheaper than fine blue moonstone, and completely legitimate. It is simply a different stone, and a shop that does not say so is either careless or hoping you will not ask.
The reverse confusion is rarer but happens: dark labradorite sold as “black moonstone”. There is no such material. If the body is dark and the flash is a sheet rather than a glow, you are looking at labradorite.
How to tell them apart in ten seconds
- Look at the body, not the flash. Moonstone is translucent — light passes through and the glow seems to sit under the surface. Labradorite is opaque and the colour sits on top like oil on water.
- Move it slowly. Moonstone’s glow moves as one soft band. Labradorite’s colour switches in steps — blue here, gold there, then nothing — because it comes from interference at internal twinning planes.
- Check the background. Hold it against white paper. Moonstone stays milky; labradorite stays dark.
- Weigh the price. A full strand of vivid blue-flash “moonstone” at a very low price is almost always white labradorite.
Which one to choose
Choose moonstone if you want something quiet, if the piece is for evening or for sleep-adjacent rituals, or if the wearer dresses in pale and neutral colours. Moonstone disappears in bright daylight, which is either its charm or its flaw depending on the wearer.
Choose labradorite if you want contrast, if the wearer dresses in black or denim, or if the piece needs to read from across a room. It is also the better choice for a man’s bracelet and for anyone who wants a statement without a bright colour.
Both are equally unsuitable for heavy wear. Feldspar has perfect cleavage, meaning it splits along flat planes: a hard knock can take a chip out of a bead that no polish will fix. Neither belongs on a climbing wall or in a gym bag loose with keys.
Meaning, briefly
Moonstone is filed under water and the moon: rhythm, patience, cycles. Labradorite is usually filed under transformation and protection — the northern lights caught in stone, in the folklore of Labrador and Finland. Neither reading is older than the other in any meaningful way, and neither has any clinical basis. Pick the one whose look you want to wear for years; the meaning will follow the object, as it always does.
Care for both
Lukewarm water, soft cloth, no ultrasonic, no steam, no hot car. Store in a pouch rather than loose in a box. Keep both away from sudden temperature change, which is the usual cause of a split along a cleavage plane.
Questions people ask
Is labradorite more durable than moonstone?
On paper they are identical at Mohs 6–6.5 with perfect cleavage. In practice dark labradorite hides small chips better, so it appears to age more gracefully.
Can I wear them together?
Yes, and it looks good — pale glow against dark flash. Just separate them with a knot or a metal spacer so the two stones are not grinding against each other.
Which is better for a gift?
Moonstone for a first piece or a quiet wearer; labradorite for someone with a defined style. If you are unsure, look at what colour phone case and bag they carry — that is the honest answer.
The meanings described here are cultural associations, not medical claims. Crystal jewellery is worn as a reminder of an intention; it does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
