Most people choose a crystal bracelet by colour, wear it for a week, and never quite connect with it again. The fix is to choose by intention first and colour second: decide what the piece is for, then pick the stone whose tradition matches that job. This guide walks through the decision in five questions, with the honest answer to each.
Question 1: What is the bracelet actually for?
Say the sentence out loud: “When I touch this, I want to remember ______.” That blank is the intention, and it will narrow the whole catalogue at once. The traditional Chinese stone pairings are:
| If you want to remember… | Traditionally worn stones | Element |
|---|---|---|
| Calm and clear thinking | Amethyst, clear quartz, aquamarine | Water / Metal |
| Softness, self-worth, connection | Rose quartz, moonstone, kunzite | Fire / Water |
| Drive and new beginnings | Garnet, red agate, citrine, red jasper | Fire |
| Growth and patience | Green aventurine, jade, prehnite, moss agate | Wood |
| Boundaries and steadiness | Black obsidian, smoky quartz, onyx | Earth / Water |
| Wealth and opportunity | Citrine, rutilated quartz, pyrite | Earth / Metal |
| A reset when nothing is wrong but nothing feels right | Clear quartz, moonstone | Metal / Water |
Two intentions can share a wrist — calm plus drive, softness plus boundary — but three is where bracelets start fighting each other and the wearer.
Question 2: Who is wearing it, and how hard do they live?
Intention does not matter if the bracelet falls apart. Match the stone to the wear:
- Gym, hands-on work, children: quartz-family stones (amethyst, clear quartz, citrine) at Mohs 7. Avoid moonstone, kunzite and pearls.
- Office, gentle daily wear: anything in the catalogue, including soft stones — with the evening-care habit that softness requires.
- A gift for someone whose habits you do not know: quartz family again. It is the honest default, not a cop-out.
Question 3: What size and weight actually get worn?
The best-intentioned bracelet stays in a drawer if it is wrong on the wrist.
- Measure the wrist with a soft tape or a strip of paper, then add roughly 1–1.5 cm of ease for a comfortable drape.
- Our adjustable cords cover roughly 15–19 cm and suit most adult wrists; outside that range, tell us — a custom length takes a few extra days.
- 6–8 mm beads read as everyday and disappear under sleeves; 10 mm and above is a statement and carries real weight.
- A strand should slide over the hand with a little resistance. If it falls off by itself, it will be lost by spring.
Question 4: Does the stone itself pass inspection?
Whatever the intention, check the physical piece before you commit:
- Colour evenness without being suspiciously perfect. Natural stones show zoning, veils or inclusions. Too-perfect beads at a low price are usually glass or dyed.
- Clean drill holes. Chips around holes are where a strand begins to fail.
- Cord and knots. Knotted between beads means one broken knot does not empty the bracelet.
- Cool touch. Real crystal stays cool against the skin longer than glass — a ten-second test that catches most fakes.
Question 5: What does it need to match?
A bracelet that only works with one outfit gets worn once a month. Clear quartz, pearl, and grey-toned stones go with nearly everything; deep reds and bright greens make demands. If the wearer already has a signature metal (silver, gold), match the findings, not the beads — mixed findings read as accidental.
The honest part
No stone does the work. What a good bracelet does is put a physical reminder where your hands already are, dozens of times a day, so the intention survives contact with the week. Choose the stone that makes that reminder feel true to you — a stone you chose deliberately for a quiet reason will be worn long after a beautiful one bought in a hurry is not.
The meanings described here are cultural associations, not medical claims. Crystal jewellery is worn as a reminder of an intention; it does not diagnose, treat or prevent any condition.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pick a crystal bracelet by birthstone or by intention?
Start with intention, then use the birthstone as a tie-breaker. Two people born in the same month often want very different things from a piece — one wants calm for sleep, the other wants momentum for a new job. Intention decides the stone; the birthstone decides the story you tell.
What wrist size should I order if I am between sizes?
Order the larger size and use the adjustable cord. Our bracelets are strung for wrists of roughly 15–19 cm; below or above that range, message the studio before ordering and we will confirm the fit.
Are bigger beads always better?
No. Bead size changes weight and how the piece sits, not value. A 10mm strand on a small wrist rotates and catches on sleeves; an 8mm strand in the same stone often gets worn far more. Choose the size you will actually keep on.
How can I tell natural stone from dyed stone or glass?
Look for inconsistency: natural beads vary slightly in tone, veining and surface texture within the same strand. Perfectly even colour, bubbles, or a uniform pattern repeated bead to bead usually point to glass or dye. Ask for a close-up photo in daylight before you buy.
